"More Than What?"

Materials: Vinyl Sticker Paper in Black and White, Vinyl Cutter

Description: These two sentences, which advocate for humanity, kindness, and gentleness, are from the Final Speech, which is the ending speech of the movie The Great Dictator, written and performed by Charlie Chaplin. By putting several white words on "Machinery" and "Cleverness", the audience can hardly distinguish between the white words and the white wall as background when they are standing in a distance. This illegibility of text would arouse the audience’s curiosity so they would come closer to find out what other words are hidden in this work. If the audience had never heard this speech before, they would be perplexed by the meaning of these two words. These white words serve to further explain and embody the words "Machinery" and "Cleverness". "Machinery" refers to ruthless people who lack moral sense and empathy and seek dictatorship and violence. "Cleverness" refers to people who believe they are clever but actually despise others, while they are typically selfish and greedy.
